Layered sandstone cliffs beside a wide, empty beach on the Óbidos Coast

Atlantic beaches and lagoon landscapes north of Peniche.

Óbidos Coast

Óbidos Coast, Lagoa de Óbidos and the beaches extending north from Peniche — an Atlantic shoreline and a sheltered coastal lagoon, connected but distinct.

Óbidos Coast groups two distinct environments: an open Atlantic shoreline running north from Peniche, and the sheltered Lagoa de Óbidos, a coastal lagoon separated from the ocean by a low sand spit. Foz do Arelho, at the mouth of the lagoon, is administratively part of the municipality of Caldas da Rainha — it is grouped here editorially with the Óbidos / Lagoa de Óbidos cluster because of its geography, not its administrative boundary.
