Beaches, culture and big-wave winters

Nazaré

Nazaré combines beaches, maritime culture and year-round coastal tourism with the spectacular winter swells of Praia do Norte.

Nazaré is often reduced to its winter big-wave reputation, but the town and its beaches are a coastal destination in their own right throughout spring, summer and autumn — with swimming beaches, viewpoints, local gastronomy and maritime heritage worth visiting outside the big-wave season.

The two faces of Nazaré

One world-famous big-wave arena, and one everyday town beach — very different places, a few minutes apart.

Not the same beach, not the same use

Praia do Norte

A big-wave arena, not a swimming or recreational surf beach. Relevant mainly as a winter spectacle from the clifftop, or for the professional/tow-in surfers it's known for.

Nazaré town beach

The everyday beach in front of the town — swimming, sunbathing and approachable surf year-round, unrelated to the big-wave conditions at Praia do Norte a short distance north.

Nazaré Big Waves

Praia do Norte, just north of town, is where the Nazaré Canyon can turn Atlantic swell into some of the largest waves ever surfed. Atlantic Six tracks the real offshore swell, period and wind reaching the area.

If you plan to watch, do it from the clifftop terraces above the beach, never from the sand or the water's edge.
